Federal prosecutors have brought criminal charges against a Republican representative from New York, Rep. George Santos, whose shocking pattern of fabrications and lies shocked even senior lawmakers.
Santos is expected to show up as early as this Wednesday in federal court in the eastern district of New York, where the allegations have been filed under secrecy. Although the precise substance of the allegations could not yet be ascertained, the FBI and Justice Department public integrity prosecutors in New York and Washington have been looking into claims that Santos made false statements in campaign finance reports and other claims.
The attorney for the congressman declined to comment. The Justice Department, FBI, and US Attorney’s Office spokespeople all declined to comment to CNN, which broke the story first.
