Fraudulent Rep. George Santos, charged with 13 counts of federal crimes, faces up to 20 years in prison on top counts

George Santos, a Republican congressman from Long Island, New York, who is famous for fabricating key parts of his biographical life story. was arrested on federal criminal charges on Wednesday before his expected court appearance.

The federal courthouse has Santos under arrest for seven counts of wire fraud, three counts of money laundering, one count of stealing from the government, one count of theft of public funds, and two counts of providing materially false statements to the House of Representatives,

According to the indictment, Santos misled supporters into giving to a firm under the false pretense that the funds would be used to advance his campaign. It alleges that instead, he used the money for personal needs like buying expensive designer clothing and paying off his credit cards. Santos is additionally charged with falsifying information regarding his financial situation on congressional disclosure forms, seeking and receiving unemployment benefits while working as a regional director of an investment firm, and campaigning for office.
